它是世界上产量zui大的塑料产品之一，价格便宜，应用广泛，聚氯乙烯树脂为白色或浅黄色粉末。根据不同的用途可以加入不同的添加剂，聚氯乙烯塑料可呈现不同的物理性能和力学性能。在聚氯乙烯树脂中加入适量的增塑剂，可制成多种硬质、软质和透明制品。
纯的聚氯乙烯的密度为1.4g/cm3,加入了 增塑剂和填料等的聚氯乙烯塑件的密度一般为1.15-2.00g/cm3。
硬聚氯乙烯有较好的抗拉、抗弯、抗压和抗冲击能力，可单独用做结构材料。
软聚氯乙烯的柔软性、断裂伸长率、耐寒性会增加，但脆性、硬度、、拉伸强度会降低。
聚氯乙烯有较好的电气绝缘性能，可作低频绝缘材料，其化学稳定性也好。由于聚氯乙烯的热稳定性较差，长时间加热会导致分解，放出HCL气体，使聚氯乙烯变色，所以其应用范围较窄，使用温度一般在-15~55℃之间。
